Glass balustrades in Lloret de Mar

Glass balustrades for terraces, staircases and pools

On the Costa Brava the view is the most expensive asset a house has. A glass balustrade gives it back whole, with no bars slicing the horizon.

Swapping a masonry or steel railing for glass is the single change that transforms a sea-view terrace most. Light reaches the back of the living room, the space feels larger and the view stops being cut into strips. And contrary to what many people assume, it is safer than a conventional railing: it cannot be climbed and has no gaps a child can fit through.

We always work with laminated safety glass — two or three toughened panes bonded with PVB interlayer or SentryGlas resin. If a pane takes a heavy impact, the fragments stay bonded to the interlayer and the panel stays standing; it never falls away. We calculate thickness from the height, the length of the run, the fixing type and the local wind load — on the seafront, with the garbí and the tramuntana, that is no small detail — and always specify above what Spain's CTE DB-SUA code requires.

Three fixing systems, depending on the look you want: a continuous U-channel recessed into the slab or bolted to its edge, which gives the cleanest result with no visible hardware; stainless steel clamps, the most affordable option and the quickest to install; and point fixings with through-bolted standoffs, very common on interior staircases. The handrail can be stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium in any colour, timber — or omitted entirely where regulations allow.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, and safer than a barred railing. Laminated safety glass is engineered to resist soft-body impact, and if it did break the panes stay bonded to the interlayer. It also removes the risk of a child climbing it, which is the real cause of most balcony accidents.
The CTE requires 90 cm where the drop is under 6 m and 110 cm where it is greater. In practice, on upper floors along the Costa Brava we almost always go to 110 cm. We confirm it at the measuring visit based on your terrace's actual height.
On the seafront water marks do show more. We solve it with a water-repellent treatment applied in the workshop so salt and rain run off. After that, water and a squeegee every few weeks is enough.
In many cases yes, by fixing to the slab edge with clamps or standoffs instead of recessing a channel. That is the usual answer when the terrace is already waterproofed and you don't want to lift the paving.
Yes. Catalan regulations require a minimum height and no climbable footholds around a pool; glass satisfies both naturally. We usually resolve it with a U-channel anchored to the coping.
